I may be a week or so late, but what kind of female sports
blogger would I be if I didn’t address the Super Bowl’s most defining and
revolutionary commercial “Like A Girl.”
When I first started writing this blog, someone told me it
sounded like it was written “by a girl.” Well, newsflash… IT IS! There’s no
denying that. I am a female and I am reminded of that each month like
clockwork. I don’t know if you would call me a girly girl or just someone who
cares about the way I present myself. Because yes, I like to paint my nails, I
love makeup, and I try my best to make sure my hair is flawless. But between
nail and hair appointments I make sure to watch the game.
This video first came across my Facebook newsfeed months ago
when it was published in June 2014. I immediately fell in love with the
campaign and what is stood for.
“Like a girl” should not be used a form of insult, rather is
should be looked as a compliment of strength. Just as the words “gay” and
“retarded” are no longer socially accepted, I hope to raise my daughter in a
time where being a girl is just as acceptable and respected as her male
counterparts. Feminism is the support of equal opportunity and rights among all genders. Whether you’re a feminist
or meminist (male support of equal rights), I don’t think this commercial could
have any substantial negative feedback.

Being a female with a passion for sports, I have encountered
my fair share of crude comments. However, I don’t let people’s lack of support
or uneducated opinions stop me from acting “like a girl.”
So… I will continue to write
